History of Jenkins Chapel
Missionary Baptist Church
1885-Present
Jenkins Chapel was formerly called Capps Chapel. In 1885, the people of this community saw the need, or had the desire for a Missionary Baptist Church. The benevolent T.J. Capps donated land and a small building for the church. It was known at that time as Capps Chapel, and its Pastor was Solomon Henderson. Rev. John E. Everett, who helped establish Little Zion A.M.E. Zion Church, joined Capps Chapel and worked diligently to help get it established. The church remained on Capps’ farm for ten years. It was rebuilt on its present site on land that was donated by J.B. Jenkins. The church was then re-named in his honor.
Our pastors came in this order: Rev. Solomon Henderson, Rev. A.J. Jones, Rev. J.D. White, Rev. B.I. Davis, Rev. J.E. Kornegay, Rev. L.R. Reese, Rev. B. Holt, Rev. Chromes, Rev.W.C. Ollison, Rev. J.D. Jacobs, Rev. C. Brandon, Rev. James Hansley, Rev. R.C. Johnson and our current Pastor Johnny Williams.
It was under the pastoral ship of Rev. W.C. Ollison that the church was rebuilt in 1960. We experienced many long and tedious hours of church drives, cake raffles, fish fries, and so on it wasn’t easy, but thank God we made it. In later years, we built the fellowship hall and it has recently been dedicated in honor of the late Deacon William E. Everett. In 2010 we added the new addition to our fellowship hall and it was dedicated to our late Mother Willie M. Hucks.
